A devastating windstorm has left scores of residents homeless in Njegbeje Village, part of the Igodor Community in Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State, after destroying over 50 houses.
The windstorm, which struck on Sunday night and was followed by a torrential downpour, also destroyed property estimated to be worth billions of naira.
Ogoja Local Government Chairman, Christopher Agbeh, visited the affected community on Wednesday to assess the extent of the damage.
Describing the event as a “monumental and natural disaster,” Agbeh expressed deep concern over the scale of destruction.
“This is a tragic situation that requires swift action from both the state and federal governments,” he said.
Locals likened the storm’s intensity to a “mini-tsunami,” noting that it not only leveled residential buildings but also wiped out farmlands, economic trees, and essential infrastructure, severely disrupting daily life.
“The present administration is both responsive and compassionate, and I will ensure that relief materials and support for rebuilding are provided promptly,” the council boss assured.
The Village Head, Matthew Egbor, described the storm as the worst natural disaster in Njegbeje’s history.
“This disaster took us completely by surprise. Homes, farms, and economic trees were all swept away. Many of us are now sleeping on bare ground in makeshift shelters. Starvation and homelessness are setting in,” he lamented.
Egbor appealed for urgent intervention from government agencies and humanitarian organizations, stressing the community’s desperate need for food, shelter, and medical aid.
“This is a critical period for our survival,” he said.
