The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a three-day ultimatum to waste management contractors to evacuate refuse across satellite towns or risk termination of their contracts.
Wike gave the directive on Friday after inspecting road projects in Karu, Bwari, Kubwa and along the Apo–Karshi corridor in Abuja. He instructed the Coordinator of the FCT Satellite Towns Development Department, Mr. Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, to ensure strict compliance with the order.
The minister expressed particular concern over mounting heaps of refuse along the Orozo–Apo–Karshi corridor, describing the situation as unacceptable and embarrassing. “By Monday or Tuesday, if I still see this refuse, his job will be terminated. This is unacceptable. It is embarrassing. These areas are no longer villages; development has taken over, and nobody will accept this,” he warned.
Wike assured residents that refuse across satellite towns would be cleared promptly to restore environmental sanitation. He reiterated that the FCT Administration would not tolerate poor performance by waste contractors, recalling that during a November 15, 2025, meeting with newly approved service providers, he stressed that incompetence, political patronage, and excuses would not be accepted.
At the meeting, the minister noted that waste management remained a major challenge in Abuja due largely to the “insincerity and lack of capacity” of previous operators. He emphasised performance-based engagement, saying contractors must demonstrate capacity rather than connections: “Do your work, get your pay. If you don’t do your work, you don’t expect to be paid. It will be terminated.”
