ASHENEWS reports that the Niger state government says it generated N5 million from fines levied against illegal loggers in Mokwa local government area of the state in September 2023.
The state commissioner for environment and climate change, Yakubu Muhammad Kolo stated this during a press briefing at the government house in Minna on Thursday.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Surajo Saeed, the commissioner said that the state government, with support from the World Bank, has set a target to plant 19 million trees across all parts of the state in the next four years.
The commissioner said that the state government was reintroducing monthly sanitation in the state.
To complement the efforts towards a cleaner Niger state, he added that the state government has directed an audit of street cleaners in the state.
He noted that the state government has resolved to also review their remunerations to further motivate them.
The Commissioner further announced that the state government has terminated a contract signed by the previous administration with a Ghanaian firm on waste management.
According to him, the state government plans to engage another firm in this regard.
