A massive sinkhole opened up on September 24, 2025, in front of Vajira Hospital on Samsen Road in Bangkok, Thailand, causing major damage to the road, pipes, power lines, and nearby infrastructure but resulting in no casualties.
The sinkhole measured about 50 meters (164 feet) deep and spanned roughly 900 square meters, swallowing vehicles and electrical poles, and prompting evacuations including from a nearby police station.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt explained that the sinkhole was triggered by a leak in a water pipe connected to a tunnel under construction for an MRT subway extension. Water from the ruptured pipe eroded the soil beneath the road, leading to collapse.
Officials also noted heavy monsoon rains likely worsened the erosion causing the ground to slip into the tunnel and the eventual sinkhole formation. Emergency crews cut electricity and water supply as a precaution, and outpatient services at Vajira Hospital were temporarily closed, though the hospital’s main structure remained safe and operational.
Ongoing monitoring and repair efforts aimed to stabilize the ground and prevent further damage.Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed there were no injuries or fatalities, though several vehicles were damaged.
Authorities continue to assess and repair the affected area while warning of ongoing hazard risks near the police station and sinkhole site as rainfall continues during the monsoon season.
