The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed the death of a tricycle rider in a road traffic accident involving a Volkswagen truck at Ekoro Junction, in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos.
According to him, the agency received distress calls through its 767/112 toll-free emergency lines at about 10:00 a.m. and immediately activated the State’s Emergency Response Plan from its Igando base.
“Upon arrival of the LASEMA Response Team, a Volkswagen truck with registration number AGL 514 XD, loaded with beverages and bottled water, was found to have fallen on a tricycle (Keke NAPEP),” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
Preliminary investigations, he explained, revealed that the truck suffered a mechanical (brake) failure while descending the road. Efforts by the driver to control the vehicle were unsuccessful, leading to the crash.
The LASEMA boss said the impact of the accident killed the tricycle rider on the spot, while the truck driver and two occupants of two other vehicles involved sustained varying degrees of injuries.
He added that the injured victims had been taken to hospital for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were handed over to officers of the Nigerian Police Force from the Ilewe Police Division.
“The affected vehicles have been towed to the Ilewe Police Station, and the scattered goods, beverages, and bottled water have been cleared from the road to restore normal traffic flow,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
He further noted that the LASEMA Response Team conducted a risk assessment and implemented safety measures to prevent secondary incidents. Traffic management efforts were also put in place to ease congestion during recovery operations.
“The operation has been successfully concluded, and the road has been reopened to vehicular movement,” he added.
Responders at the scene included the LASEMA Response Team (Igando Base), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and officers of the Nigerian Police Force, Ilewe Division.
