A devastating landslide triggered by heavy rains has claimed the lives of five members of a single family in Komer Kebele, South Ari Woreda, Ari Zone, in South Ethiopia Regional State.
According to Deputy Commander Ashenafi Haile, the Public Relations Director of the South Ethiopia Regional Police, the landslide struck on Sunday after intense rainfall, leading to the collapse of the family’s home. “A father, mother, and their three children were killed when their house was buried by the landslide,” he told state-affiliated media.
The disaster has displaced over 200 residents and caused significant damage to local infrastructure, regional officials reported.
In response, Tilahun Kebede, President of the South Ethiopia Region, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. “Our hearts go out to the bereaved family and the entire community affected by this disaster,” he stated in a message shared on social media. He also urged residents living in landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant and take safety measures as seasonal rains continue to intensify.
Emergency services and local authorities are working to support the displaced and assess the full extent of the damage.
