President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has chosen Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new head (Director-General) of the National Council on Climate Change.
She replaces Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, who was the second DG to lead the Council after the pioneer Salisu Dahiri. Dr. Madueke started the role in June 2024 and helped set up the organization.
Majekodunmi is an expert in climate finance and environmental law. She has more than 17 years of experience in the field.
Before this appointment, she worked as the Financial Adviser to the Council.
Her appointment was confirmed on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy. He said this decision fits into President Tinubu’s larger plans to fight climate change.
The official statement said Majekodunmi’s appointment shows that the Tinubu government is serious about addressing climate change, not just for the environment but also to support the economy, security, and fairness in society.
President Tinubu also thanked the former DG, Madueke, for her hard work and for building a strong base for the Council’s future.
The National Council on Climate Change was created by the Climate Change Act in 2021. It is Nigeria’s main body for managing climate actions, putting policies in place, handling carbon budgets, and finding money for green projects.
