President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renewal of the appointment of Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC).
Yelwa, who first assumed office in 2021, will serve a second and final four-year term in line with Section 93 of the Electricity Act, 2023.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
President Tinubu urged Yelwa to build on the commission’s achievements so far and to bring greater innovation and dedication to delivering on its mandate of improving the lives of communities in hydroelectric power-producing areas.
Background and career
Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa is a seasoned administrator and development manager with decades of experience in public service and project implementation. Before his appointment to N-HYPPADEC, he held various strategic positions in both state and federal government agencies, where he worked on community development, infrastructure, and environmental management.
First-Term Achievements
During his first tenure at N-HYPPADEC, Yelwa oversaw several intervention projects aimed at tackling the socio-economic and environmental challenges faced by host communities of hydroelectric dams. These included:
Flood Control and Mitigation: Initiating and implementing flood embankment projects to protect vulnerable communities.
Skills Acquisition and Empowerment: Establishing training programmes for youth and women to promote self-reliance and reduce poverty.
Infrastructure Development: Upgrading rural roads, schools, and healthcare facilities in affected areas.
Community Support Schemes: Providing relief materials to victims of flooding and other environmental disasters.
Mandate Ahead
With his reappointment, Yelwa is expected to consolidate these gains while driving new programmes that focus on climate resilience, improved livelihood support, and sustainable infrastructure. His leadership will also be critical in ensuring that N-HYPPADEC’s initiatives align with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s broader goals of inclusive development and poverty reduction.
