President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of N2 billion for the construction of resettlement homes for victims of the recent devastating flood in Mokwa Local Government Area, Niger State.
Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima disclosed this during a condolence visit to the flood-ravaged area on Tuesday, where he met with displaced families and inspected damaged infrastructure.
The visit aimed to convey the Federal Government’s sympathy and commitment to swift recovery efforts.
According to Shettima, the President has directed urgent intervention on the drainage system and the delivery of 20 trucks of food items to affected residents.
Shettima, who also chairs the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, announced that arrangements are underway for the deployment of a 14MVA transformer to restore steady power supply in Mokwa.
The Vice President expressed solidarity with the people and praised the swift response of the Niger State Government, led by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, represented at the event by Deputy Governor m, Yakubu Garba.
The Governor’s delegation thanked the Federal Government for its prompt support and used the opportunity to call for additional intervention, including the rehabilitation of collapsed bridges and damaged rail lines that connect the North to the South, which have disrupted socio-economic activities and access to education.
He also appealed for the urgent repair of the Jaba-Mokwa-Bida road, noting the critical role it plays in easing transportation across the region.
According to the Special Adviser on Special Duties and leader of the State Response Centre, Dr. Murtala Bagana, the disaster left a trail of destruction with 13,354 people affected, 4,534 displaced individuals, 458 households impacted, 161 lives lost, 186 injured and 84 people missing.
He added that 265 buildings destroyed while two major roads and five key bridges were washed away.
