The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that environmental considerations are prioritised in the deployment of telecommunications infrastructure across the country.
The Director-General of NESREA, Dr Innocent Barikor made this statement issued by Mrs Nwamaka Ejiofor, Assistant Director (Press), NESREA, on Wednesday in Abuja.
Barikor emphasised that all telecommunications installations must comply with existing environmental regulations.
He made the remarks during a visit by two European companies, Consulting & Management and Europe Ltd.
The companies briefed him on the European Union-funded project titled “EU Support to Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy for studies in support of a 90,000km Fibre Optic Network and Improved Digital Literacy in Nigeria.”
The D-G assured that the environmental implications of the project would be carefully considered, with due diligence carried out before any work commences.
He also highlighted the importance of sensitising citizens to the project.
A Legal and Licensing Expert from the European Union and leader of the visiting delegation, Prof. Muhammed Ladan said the team was already taking steps to ensure environmental compliance, particularly with the Environmental Impact Assessment for the project.
Ladan added that the visit to NESREA was part of ongoing stakeholder engagement and consultations.
