The Sokoto State Government, through its Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has started officially training boat drivers and operators in the state. This is part of their efforts to stop accidents during floods and avoid boat-related deaths.
The training began after the state bought new equipment: motorized fiber boats that can carry 20 people and 1,000 life jackets to help save lives.
These items were earlier checked by Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, who was represented by his deputy, Alhaji Muhammad Idris Gobir. The inspection took place at the Sokoto Furniture Factory during a special event.
Officials said the goal of the training is to teach boat operators how to drive boats safely, manage water transport, and correctly use life jackets. The program is meant to improve safety, especially during flooding.
After the training is finished, the boats and life jackets will be officially given out. Local government leaders will help distribute them in 10 areas of the state that often experience flooding.
Mustapha Umar, the Director of Relief and Rehabilitation at Sokoto SEMA, said the program is very important. He explained that the new boats and jackets will help protect both the boat drivers and passengers. He also remembered past boat accidents, including deadly ones that happened in 2025.
Speaking on behalf of the Special Adviser to SEMA, Hon. Aminu Liman Bodinga, Umar praised the state government for thinking ahead and focusing on the safety and well-being of its people.
