The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thundery and rainy weather across various parts of the country from Monday to Wednesday.
According to NiMet’s weather outlook released Sunday in Abuja, early morning thunderstorms—some with rainfall—are expected over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna States in the northern region.
The rest of the northern region is expected to experience sunny intervals with patches of cloud.
“Thunderstorms with rainfall are expected in the afternoon and evening across parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, Gombe, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna States,” the agency stated.
In the central region, morning thunderstorms and rains are anticipated in parts of Niger, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while other areas will remain mostly sunny with some cloud cover.
Afternoon or evening thunderstorms—possibly with rain—are forecast over Plateau, FCT, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Niger States.
For the southern region, cloudy skies with light morning showers are expected in parts of Ogun, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms, accompanied by light rain, are likely across Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.
In the northern region, the day will begin with sunny skies and patches of clouds, though scattered morning thunderstorms with heavy rains may occur in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Kaduna States.
Afternoon and evening thunderstorms with light rainfall are expected over Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe, Borno, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and Bauchi States.
In the central region, morning thunderstorms with light rain are likely in parts of FCT, Niger, Kogi, and Benue States. Later in the day, Nasarawa, FCT, Benue, Kogi, and Plateau States could experience thunderstorms with light rain.
The southern region will see cloudy skies and isolated morning showers in Akwa Ibom and Cross River, followed by thunderstorms and light rain later in the day.
Morning thunderstorms are anticipated in Zamfara, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, and Sokoto States in the northern region.
Heavy afternoon to evening thunderstorms are likely across Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Jigawa, Taraba, and Adamawa States.
In the central region, cloudy skies will dominate the morning, followed by moderate rainfall and thunderstorms across the region in the afternoon and evening.
The southern region is expected to experience light rains throughout the day.
NiMet has warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms, urging the public to:
- Fasten loose objects to prevent damage or injury.
- Avoid driving in heavy rain.
- Disconnect electrical appliances during storms.
- Stay away from tall trees to prevent accidents from falling branches.
Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather updates for better flight planning.
