Residents of Kano who rely on charcoal for cooking and other energy needs have expressed concern over the sharp increase in its price. They reported that the cost has risen beyond the reach of many, making it increasingly difficult for ordinary people to afford.
A housewife, Aisha Isa, noted that a large bag of charcoal, which previously sold for ₦4,000, now costs ₦6,500. She added that finding small quantities for ₦50 is impossible, with the minimum price now at ₦150.
Another resident, Agnes John, lamented that charcoal is gradually becoming unaffordable for the common person and urged the government to subsidize cooking gas to make it more accessible.
Baba Jibril, who prefers using charcoal for cooking and ironing due to its smoke-free nature, said the current price of ₦6,500 to ₦7,000 per bag is beyond his budget. He is considering switching to firewood, but that too has become expensive.

Hauwa Adamu, a food vendor in Tarauni, observed that the high cost of kerosene and cooking gas has led to a surge in charcoal’s popularity.
Charcoal dealer Rabiu Abdullahi, based on France Road in Sabon Gari, attributed the price hike to increased transportation costs. He noted that while a sack of charcoal now sells for ₦6,700, demand continues to rise due to the high cost of kerosene and cooking gas.
Another trader, Nura Garba from Dakata, linked the price surge to high transportation costs and insecurity. He mentioned that many families are purchasing charcoal in bulk because it is more economical than other energy sources. Garba added that the increase in demand has boosted business, with daily sales now exceeding two bags.
