ASHENEWS reports that residents of Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State has bemoaned the act of open defecation and dumping of refuse in the drainage.

This development, according to the residents, causing pollution and making the environment unhabitable.

Speaking with our Correspondent, a resident of Abata area, Mr. Tijani Oyeniyi explained that it is common practice in the area as people choose to defecate in the drainage.

He noted that several attempts to dissuade people from the act has proved abortive as the perpetrators did not yield to warnings and cautions.

On her part, a resident of Ilé Balogun area, Mrs. Adefolake Ojo lamented over the offensive odour that emanates from the dastard act adding that this has made living in the area unbearable.

She revealed that the refuses obstruct the pathway of the water thereby creating problems for the residents of the area.

“People always derive some kind of joy while perpetrating this act. Severally, they have been warned to desist from such act and yet, little or no result was achieved.

“if you look around, you will notice the mess the act has created and it is very worrisome” She said.

On his part, the Chairman, Transition Implementation Committee, Honourable Jàre Olatundun stated that the act has been in practice for years and the government has left no stone unturned in order to curb the act.

The Chairman noted that his administration is working on providing amenities that will help to put an end to the act.

He revealed that, his administration has won the fight against indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the road.

Olatundun further stated that many people were penalized before the feat to end indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the road was achieved.

While calling on all hands to be on deck so as to fight the menace, Olatundun mentioned that, government alone cannot stop the people from perpetrating the act, adding that collaborative effort is needed so as to stop the practice.

He encouraged landlords and tenants to ensure that, toilet facilities and bins are provided for their convenience as open defecation and dumping of refuse will not be tolerated anymore.

The Chairman added that plans are in top gear which will ensure that the government agency saddled with the responsibility of collecting refuse for onward dumping at designated site are implemented and put to use.

He then enjoined the perpetrators to desist from such act so as not to face the wrath of the law when caught, adding that, the act is injurious to lives of everyone living in such environment.
