The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has urged Nigerians—particularly people with asthma and other respiratory conditions—to exercise caution as dust haze and thunderstorms affect parts of the country.
In its weather outlook released on Sunday, NiMet said dust particles are currently in suspension across several regions, posing health and visibility risks. The agency warned that the conditions could disrupt transportation and aviation operations.
“Driving in the rain should be done with caution. Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning,” the agency said.
NiMet also advised the public to stay updated through its regular weather bulletins and its website, www.nimet.gov.ng.
Forecast highlights
- Monday to Wednesday: Haziness and sunshine expected nationwide.
- North-Central: Predominantly sunny and hazy conditions throughout the period.
- Southern Region: Mostly sunny with patches of cloud, with chances of afternoon or evening thunderstorms.
Light rains are forecast later in the day over parts of Ogun, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.
On Tuesday, moderate dust haze is expected over Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, and Taraba states, while slight dust haze will prevail across the rest of the northern region.
By Wednesday, NiMet predicts thick dust haze over the northern region and moderate dust haze across the central states, with isolated thunderstorms and light rains over Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers.
Health advisory
Dust haze occurs when fine desert particles, often from the Sahara, are carried into the atmosphere by wind, reducing visibility—sometimes to less than 1,000 metres. NiMet warned that the particles can irritate the airways and worsen symptoms in people with respiratory illnesses.
The agency urged vulnerable groups to limit outdoor exposure and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen.
