The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Centre for Well-being and Integrated Nutrition Solutions (C-WINS) have teamed up to fight climate change in Nigeria. Their goal is to connect climate, public health, food security, soil health, and community strength in one big plan.
They plan to help farmers with early warnings, hold community workshops about smart farming for the climate, and give real-time weather updates to improve food production and reduce health problems caused by climate change.
At the event where the partnership was announced, NiMet’s leader, Professor Charles Anosike, said it’s urgent to include climate information in Nigeria’s plans for the future.
“Climate knowledge is a must now,” Anosike said. “With the right weather data, we can cut down on health risks, grow more food, take better care of our soil, and be ready for disasters.”
He added that NiMet’s main job in this partnership is to give accurate, local weather forecasts, which will be the base for their work.
“Our job is to make sure farmers, health workers, and communities get timely and reliable weather info,” he said. “Without data, we can’t plan. And without planning, we can’t prepare for challenges.”
Dr Mahmud Mustafa, the head of C-WINS, praised NiMet for its efforts and said the partnership will lead to real benefits for people on the ground.
“At C-WINS, we’re happy about this partnership because it’s not just theory — it’s about using weather data in ways that really help people,” he said.
He said C-WINS will focus on working closely with communities and offering health-based support.
“We’ll create training programs for health workers, help farmers adjust based on local weather trends, and make sure even rural communities can understand and use this information.”
“Climate forecasts shouldn’t just be stored away — they should help people survive and succeed,” he said.
Dr Mustafa also praised NiMet’s recent achievements, saying the agency had shown strong leadership in making sure climate data is useful for development across Nigeria.
Both NiMet and C-WINS said the partnership will help grow more crops, lower climate-related health problems, and help communities become stronger and more prepared for climate change.
“This teamwork between NiMet and C-WINS will give people the tools they need to face climate issues directly,” Anosike said. “It’s about making sure every farmer, health worker, and community has the info they need to act before disaster happens.”
