The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been given N10 billion by the National Economic Council (NEC). This money will help NEMA prepare better and respond quickly before the 2025 flood season.
The money will be used to help stop floods and manage their effects all over the country.
The NEC approved this funding during a meeting on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The meeting was led by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima.
At the meeting, NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, talked about the current flood situation and how the agency plans to respond.
Mrs. Umar also explained in detail how NEMA is getting ready for the floods. She talked about checking risks, sending early warnings, and how they plan to work together to handle floods in 2025.
A press statement about the money was shared on Friday by Manzo Ezekiel, who is in charge of press at NEMA.Besides NEMA, the NEC also agreed to give N3 billion to each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
They also gave N1.5 billion each to the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation. This is to help prevent floods and manage emergencies.
The statement said, “After Mrs. Umar’s presentation and talks about the need to act quickly, the NEC approved money to help fight floods and respond to them across the country.
The approved amounts are: N3 billion each for the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory; N1.5 billion each for the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation; and N10 billion for NEMA.
Mrs. Zubaida Umar thanked the Vice President and the council for giving the money quickly. She promised that NEMA will use the funds well, honestly, and carefully to protect people during emergencies.
She also said NEMA will keep working closely with state governments, ministries, and other partners to make sure flood response is well-organized, timely, and focused on helping people.
