The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has passed a bill to establish a state policy on the mainstreaming of climate change actions.
The bill, titled “A Law to Provide for the Nasarawa State Policy on Climate Change for the Mainstreaming of Climate Change Actions, and for the Establishment of a Climate Change Advisory Committee and Other Related Purposes,” seeks to create a comprehensive framework for tackling climate change in the state.
Speaker of the House, Dr. Danladi Jatau, announced the passage of the bill during plenary on Monday in Lafia. He said the legislation aims to mitigate the effects of climate change on the environment and improve the well-being of residents.
According to the Speaker, once assented to by Governor Abdullahi Sule, the law will provide for the establishment of a Climate Change Advisory Committee, to be chaired by the governor, as well as a Climate Change Agency responsible for formulating and implementing related policies.
Dr. Jatau commended Mr. Mohammed Omadefu (APC–Keana) for sponsoring the bill and appreciated his colleagues for their contributions toward its passage.
“The bill, having been read for the third time, is hereby passed into law,” he declared.
He then directed the Clerk of the House to prepare a clean copy of the bill for the governor’s assent.
Earlier, the Majority Leader, Mr. Suleiman Azara, had moved a motion for the bill to scale its third reading. The motion was seconded by the Minority Leader, Mr. Luka Zhekaba, after which the House unanimously passed the bill.
