The Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Housing, Environment and Natural Resources has urged mining companies operating in the state to strictly comply with environmental laws to ensure a safer and healthier environment for citizens.
The Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Mohammed Omadefu, made the call on Wednesday during an oversight visit to Avatar LandMass Resources Development Limited, a lithium mining company operating in Udege Area Administrative Council of the state.
Omadefu said the visit was part of the committee’s constitutional responsibility to monitor and ensure environmental compliance in mining operations.
“We are here to fulfill our constitutional responsibility as an arm of government empowered to oversee environmental activities in the state.
We want to see things for ourselves and correct any irregularities, if discovered,” he said.
The lawmaker stressed the importance of mining firms adhering to the Community Development Agreement (CDA) in line with international best practices.
“What we want from you is nothing but a safer, healthier environment and the development of our people.
We will leave no stone unturned to ensure that mining companies do the right thing for the benefit of our citizens,” Omadefu added.
Responding, the Managing Director of Avatar LandMass Resources Development Limited, Mr. Jack Jiang, commended the committee for its oversight efforts and commitment to environmental protection.
Speaking through the company’s Public Relations Manager, Mr. Benny Modey, Jiang expressed appreciation to the state government for creating an enabling environment for mining operations.
He assured that the company remains committed to complying with all environmental regulations and contributing to the sustainable development of the state.
