The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued a driver who was trapped in a multiple-vehicle crash at Ojota, inbound Ketu, along the Ikorodu Road axis of Lagos.
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.
Giwa urged motorists to remain prudent and safety-conscious while on the road, stressing the importance of adhering to speed limits, exercising patience, and remaining vigilant in areas with high pedestrian activity.
According to him, preliminary incident reports revealed that a Toyota Sienna saloon car with registration number KRD 311 JH had slowed down to allow a large number of pedestrians to cross the expressway, with a mini truck positioned directly behind it.
“Tragically, a speeding Volkswagen commercial bus failed to decelerate and rammed into the two stationary vehicles, resulting in a violent collision,” he said.
Giwa explained that the impact left the Volkswagen bus driver severely trapped inside the wreckage, necessitating an urgent and coordinated rescue operation.
“LASTMA rescue operatives swiftly deployed specialized extrication equipment and successfully freed the trapped driver, thereby averting a potentially fatal outcome,” he added.
He said fellow commercial drivers at the scene promptly transported the critically injured driver, who sustained fractures, to an undisclosed medical facility for emergency treatment.
Giwa noted that officers of the Nigeria Police Force from Area ‘H’ Ogudu Division provided security support during the rescue operation, ensuring crowd control, securing the accident scene, and facilitating a smooth emergency response.
The special adviser emphasized the need for strict compliance with traffic regulations and the cultivation of responsible driving habits, noting that these remain critical to reducing road traffic accidents and safeguarding lives.
