Many activities near Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos were stopped on Monday. This happened because hundreds of disabled people protested. They were upset because a government school for people with disabilities was closed.
The protesters carried a banner from the Farmcraft Centre for the Blind. They blocked important roads going to the airport. This caused a lot of traffic and made it hard for passengers and workers to get through.
Because of the protest, airport operations were disrupted. This may cause many passengers to miss their flights. Some passengers with their luggage had to walk very far to try to catch their flights on time.
The protesters said they wanted President Bola Tinubu to hear about their problem. Their school for disabled students has been closed for almost two years, stopping their education.
They said more than 500 people joined the protest. More protesters were coming from different parts of Lagos.
The protesters promised to stay at the airport until the government gave a clear answer about reopening the school.
One protest leader, called Mr. Dolor, talked about how they tried to reopen the school before they started protesting.
He said, “You can see that blind and disabled people are angry. Many Nigerians think of them as beggars, but now they have a school that gave them respect. The school has been closed without a reason for almost two years.
“Dolor said the school is in the Isheri area of Lagos and has branches in other parts of the state.
The protesters said they sent many letters and visits to state and federal officials, but no one replied.
“That is why we are here,” Dolor said.
He also said, “We know the President does not hear every message, but this protest at the airport will surely reach him.
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria warned passengers about the heavy traffic. The spokesperson, Obiageli Orah, told people to use other roads and check their flight times with airlines.
The authority said, “This is a travel notice for people going to or from Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos. Traffic is slow because of a protest by the Farmcraft Centre for the Blind.
“They apologized for the trouble and asked travelers to be patient and get updates from official sources.
