The Kano State Government and the Government of France have strengthened cooperation under the National Water Sector Reform Programme, which focuses on social development, institutional efficiency and sustainable water management.
The development was announced in a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, on Wednesday in Kano.
Gov. Abba Yusuf received the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Marc Fonbaustier, who led an eight-member delegation to Government House, Kano.
The visit reviewed progress on ongoing water projects and explored new areas of collaboration.
Fonbaustier said the size and calibre of his delegation reflected the importance France attaches to Kano State and the northern region.
He added that France and Nigeria shared a “common destiny,” noting that the visit reaffirmed France’s commitment to its partnership with the state.
The ambassador explained that the National Water Sector Reform Programme prioritizes social impact over hardware investments, focusing on governance, capacity development and long-term sustainability.
He confirmed that France was already supporting key water initiatives in Kano and was willing to deepen its involvement.
“Our cooperation with Kano is solid, and today’s discussions opened new opportunities for expanded partnership,” he said, identifying transportation and mobility as additional areas for future collaboration.
Yusuf thanked the French Government for its continued support and reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering reliable, accessible and socially responsive water services.
He assured that Kano would remain aligned with national reform goals by strengthening institutions, promoting transparency and improving sector performance.
