Kano State has approved a comprehensive Climate Change Policy Framework to combat climate change and environmental degradation.
This new policy, championed by Governor Abba Kabir, is designed to address the region’s pressing environmental challenges and pave the way for a sustainable future.
A statement released by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, noted that the policy aims to protect public health, reduce harmful emissions, and foster sustainable economic growth throughout the state.
The framework, which was presented by the Commissioner for Environmental and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, targets critical sectors such as Agriculture, Energy, Health, Transport, Education, and Urban Development.
Dr. Hashim emphasized the policy’s focus on local solutions, global partnerships, and access to climate funds. “This policy responds to daily climate challenges and aligns with global best practices,” he said.
The key priorities of the policy include reducing emissions through renewable energy sources, protecting vulnerable communities, promoting public participation, and ensuring that gender-inclusive climate actions are at the forefront of efforts.
The policy also seeks to create a roadmap for transitioning to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy.
Governor Yusuf, in his remarks, underscored the significance of the policy for his administration’s commitment to economic resilience and inclusive growth. “It’s about securing a sustainable future for all residents,” he stated.
