The initiative was launched in response to the frequent flooding that has been causing serious problems in the area.
The king said the floods have been damaging farms, homes, and roads for years. He explained that the new measures are necessary to protect people and prevent loss of lives and property.
In a statement from the palace on Sunday, the king ordered weekly cleaning exercises in all the estates within Isheri, a town that sits between Lagos and Ogun States.
He said the clean-up efforts would include clearing drains, removing waste from gutters, proper waste disposal, and making sure water can flow freely in areas prone to flooding.
Oba Bamgbade also said he would personally visit the estates every week, along with his royal team, to check the cleanliness of the environment and ensure people are following the rules.
“This is a call for everyone to take responsibility. We need to act now to protect our community, our lives, and our property from disasters that we can prevent,” he said.“
A clean environment is not only safer but also shows that our people have values and discipline,” the king added. He said the decision was important because of recent flood warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.
He explained that this step would help avoid the kind of destruction caused by the last major flood, which covered more than half of Isheri.
The king remembered that during that flood, many landlords and tenants had to leave their homes. Some were trapped and had to be rescued by boats.
He also said the flood badly damaged public infrastructure like roads, government buildings, and farms, which caused great hardship for the people.
The king stressed the importance of making sure such a disaster does not happen again.
He said he believes the community can meet this challenge, and reminded everyone that caring for the environment is key to long-term safety and strength.
