The Ogun State Government said on Thursday that the high cost of converting to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) from fossil fuel is discouraging its adoption.
Gov. Dapo Abiodun stated this at the third edition of the Chemical Handlers and Users Workshop. The event was organised by the State Ministry of Environment in Abeokuta.
The workshop had the theme ‘Clean Energy for a Healthier State: Reducing Pollution through Sustainable Energy Solutions.’
Abiodun, represented by his deputy, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, said reducing pollution through sustainable energy solutions was crucial in tackling environmental challenges.
He explained that CNG, produced from natural gas, burns cleaner and reduces emissions from industries, households, and farms, among other sources.
The governor encouraged chemical handlers, industries, farmers, and individuals to embrace CNG for its environmental benefits and contribution to climate sustainability.
However, he stressed that CNG remained largely untapped, noting that as of May 2024, only 131 CNG conversion centres existed nationwide, with a high concentration in Ogun.
He said incentives were needed to help industries, farmers, and chemical handlers overcome concerns about the cost of switching to CNG.
“Concerns over conversion costs, refuelling, and technical expertise remain major barriers to adopting CNG,” he said.
The governor stated that the state was addressing these challenges by working with private investors to provide financing options and expand CNG infrastructure.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to environmental stewardship through initiatives like the Waste-to-Resource Revolution and the Electric Mobility Leadership programme.
He also emphasised that the state had been using CNG for its commercial transport system since 2022, even before the removal of fuel subsidies.
Also, Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said transitioning to clean energy was a shared responsibility that required cooperation from all stakeholders.
“We urge chemical handlers, industry partners, and farmers to adopt clean energy technologies, embrace circular economy practices, and prioritise environmental compliance.
“Our sincere partnership and commitment will build a legacy of sustainability, economic growth, and improved public health for future generations,” he said.
A participant from Safety International Ltd, Solomon Ogundipo, commended the state government for promoting environmental sanity through the Ministry of Environment.
He praised the workshop, saying it would enhance the capacities of stakeholders and contribute to better environmental management in Ogun.
