Heavy rain on Wednesday caused serious flooding in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Many people had to leave their homes, and the flood damaged houses, farmlands, and businesses.
Kabiru Tureta, an adviser to the local government chairperson, said that more than 50 houses were flooded. Many shops in the market were destroyed, and large areas of farmland were ruined.
“Our people have lost their homes, crops, and ways of earning a living,” Mr. Tureta told reporters. “The damage is huge.”
Local officials did an early check and found that a lot of property and food crops were lost. This has raised worries about food shortages and long-term problems for the affected people.
People affected by the flood are asking the Sokoto State government and emergency services for quick help.
“We badly need shelter, food, and medical care,” said one person who lost their home. “Many of us have nowhere to stay, and our children are sleeping outside.”
The flood has also brought up worries again about poor drainage systems and how ready local governments are to deal with heavy rains, which are happening more often due to climate change.
Experts have warned for a long time that places like Tureta, which is low-lying and has poor drainage, are at high risk during the rainy season.
The local government plans to do a full check of the damage to help guide how they will respond and help people recover.
