ASHENEWS reports that the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum on Tuesday launched the state’s 2024 tree-planting exercise.
The exercise targets the planting of 10 million seedlings in a bid by the Borno state government to control desertification in the state.
Speaking while kicking off the ceremony at Kawuri village in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno state, Zulum noted that the tree planting exercise will complement several other initiatives to reduce carbon emissions in the state.
He listed the initiatives as including the procurement of electric vehicles and gas cylinders for distribution to deserving communities.
In addition, he noted that the state government has also established an agency for the Great Green Wall to address problems of desertification and maintain the ecosystem.
The governor while equally issuing a stern warning against cutting down trees in Borno, directed the Secretary to the State Government to work with the State House of Assembly to develop measures that would address the flaws in the existing law on the environment.
Speaking earlier, the Borno State Commissioner for Environment, Emet Kiose, appealed to non-governmental organisations, clubs, associations and the general public to collect assorted seedlings from the ministry for planting.
