The Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, said on Monday in Yola that 23 people have died from the flooding that happened on Sunday. He also said that many people are still missing.
Governor Fintiri landed at Yola International Airport at 1:45 pm on Monday. From there, he went directly to the areas affected by the flood in Yola-South Local Government to comfort the victims.
At a temporary camp for displaced people in Yelewa Primary School, the governor met with families who lost their homes. He shared in their sorrow and promised that the government would provide relief supplies to help them cope.
He said the state government would quickly create a technical team. This team would work with the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency to fully assess the flood damage.
“We will set up a technical team to do a proper assessment,” he said. “Once we know the full impact, we will take strong actions to help those affected.”
While speaking to the people in the camp, the governor criticized those spreading false information or using the disaster for political gain.
“This is not the time for politics or blame,” he said. “We need to come together and take action.”
The governor said the flooding happened because of very heavy rain and because some residents blocked water channels, stopping storm water from flowing into the river. He said these problems need to be fixed to prevent future flooding.
