The Students Union Government (SUG) of the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, has appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun and lawmakers at both federal and state levels to urgently fix the Osiele-Camp Road in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The appeal was made through letters sent separately to Governor Abiodun, Senator Olamilekan Solomon Adeola (Ogun West), Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu (Ogun Central), and Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Olusegun Elemide.
Copies of the letters, jointly signed by SUG President, Comrade David Dokunmu, and General Secretary, Comrade Zainab Ajisafe, were shared with the media over the weekend.
According to the student leaders, the Osiele Road, which connects Abeokuta to the college, is in terrible condition and poses serious risks to students, staff, and other road users.
They said: “Your Excellency, this road is the main link between Abeokuta and Ibadan. Sadly, it is in a deplorable state, endangering students, staff, residents, and motorists. The situation worsens during the rainy season, leading to accidents and disrupting access to our institution.”
The union explained that they were encouraged by Governor Abiodun’s people-focused style of governance and his commitment to improving infrastructure and youth development across Ogun State.
They expressed confidence that the governor would act quickly on their request.
The students stressed that the matter is urgent because the College will soon host its Convocation Ceremony and 50th Anniversary Celebration.
They said the road is the only access route for dignitaries, government officials, alumni, and guests expected at the event.
“We therefore appeal for your intervention to rehabilitate the road. Doing so will ensure safety and dignity during this important celebration and serve as a lasting legacy of your administration’s responsiveness,” the letter added.
The union also thanked Senator Olamilekan Adeola for supporting students through the donation of mini buses, the installation of 50 solar-powered street lights, and bursary awards. They said these interventions have improved mobility, enhanced campus security, and reduced students’ financial burdens.
They, however, urged him to also assist with the rehabilitation of the Osiele-Camp Road.
In their message to Senator Shuaib Salisu, the students appreciated his role in promoting digital literacy, transparent governance, and sustainable development as Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security.
They called on him to use his position to fast-track the road reconstruction and to support ICT empowerment programmes for students.
These programmes, they said, should include provision of laptops or desktop computers for ICT laboratories, digital skills workshops and certifications, as well as bootcamps or internships through public-private partnerships.
