The Federal Government has approved the introduction of a Professorial Cadre Allowance for senior academic staff in Nigerian universities, covering professors and readers.
Under the new arrangement, professors will receive N1.8 million annually, while readers will earn N870,000 per year as professional cadre allowance. The approval is part of measures aimed at improving the welfare, motivation and productivity of senior academics in the country’s tertiary education system.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the decision in Abuja during the presentation of outcomes from the renegotiated agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
He said the allowance recognises the unique academic, research, administrative and mentorship responsibilities carried by professors and readers in Nigerian universities.
According to the minister, the allowance is designed to strengthen research leadership, improve academic coordination and enhance the quality of teaching and supervision at the highest levels of the university system.
He noted that senior academics play a critical role in curriculum development, postgraduate supervision and institutional governance, which necessitates targeted professional support.
The approval of the professorial cadre allowance forms part of a broader package of reforms in the university sector, including a review of academic remuneration and restructuring of existing allowances.
The government said these measures are intended to address longstanding concerns over staff welfare, reduce industrial disputes and stabilise the academic calendar.
Stakeholders in the education sector have described the development as a positive step toward restoring confidence in public universities and retaining experienced scholars, while urging sustained implementation and continuous engagement with academic unions to ensure lasting reforms.
