Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has distributed 340 brand-new laptops to students from the state currently studying in India.
The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Yahaya Sarki, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Birnin Kebbi.
He said the distribution took place on Friday at Swami Vivekanand Subharti University, Meerut, India, during a colourful ceremony.
According to Sarki, Governor Idris, represented by his Special Adviser on Special Duties, Shafiu Zauro, said the gesture was part of his administration’s commitment to providing students with essential learning tools to support their academic pursuits.
“This intervention by the education-friendly governor aligns with his sustained efforts to support and motivate Kebbi students studying abroad,” he said.
Sarki recalled that the governor had fully paid tuition and scholarship fees for all Kebbi students in tertiary institutions, both within and outside Nigeria.
“As a former classroom teacher and unionist, it is not surprising that Governor Idris is taking bold steps to reform the education sector,” he added.
He quoted the governor as urging the students to be good ambassadors of Kebbi State and Nigeria by excelling academically and upholding strong moral values.
The management of the university, according to the statement, commended the governor for his continued support and concern for Kebbi students in the institution.
“Since assuming office in 2023, Governor Idris has consistently sponsored the payment of tuition and scholarship fees for Kebbi students at home and abroad,” Sarki said.
He added that the governor had also settled the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) fees for secondary school students across the state.
