The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) branch, on Thursday, October 9, 2025, joined their counterparts across the country in a one-day protest to draw the attention of the Federal Government to their long-standing grievances and unmet demands.
Speaking on the development, the Chairman of SSANU, FUTA Branch, Comrade Felix Adunbi, said the protest was aimed at compelling the government to act on several unresolved issues, including what he described as the “unjust disbursement of N50 billion earned allowances,” the delay in renegotiating the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU Agreement, non-payment of outstanding two months’ salaries, non-payment of arrears of 25% and 30% salary increases, and the non-remittance of third-party deductions for May and June 2022, among other matters.
Adunbi explained that the unions had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum, followed by a 14-day extension that expired on Monday, October 6, 2025, warning that further industrial action may follow if the government continues to ignore their demands.
He added that the protest followed a directive from the National Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU, which met on October 6, 2025.
“Following the inauguration of the Joint Consultative Committee by the Honourable Minister of Education to look into the demands of JAC of NASU and SSANU, the committee met twice — on Friday, September 19, 2025, and Monday, October 6, 2025 — at the Permanent Secretary’s Conference Room in Abuja. Unfortunately, little progress was made as our demands remain unresolved despite the extension of the ultimatum,” he said.
He noted that due to the lack of progress, the National JAC directed all branches in universities and inter-university centres nationwide to convene a joint congress on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, to mobilise members for the nationwide one-day protest held the next day.
Comrade Adunbi confirmed that FUTA SSANU fully complied with the directive, holding a peaceful protest within the campus on Thursday, October 9, 2025, and now awaits further instructions from the national body.
