The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) of Sokoto State University have commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto for implementing the recently approved 25% and 35% salary increments for university staff, in line with the federal government’s directive.
In a joint statement, the unions praised the governor’s swift action in settling outstanding allowances and ensuring the payment of the N70,000 national minimum wage to all state workers. They described his commitment to workers’ welfare as commendable and urged him to sustain these positive strides.
The statement, signed by ASUU Branch Chairperson Dr. Saidu Isah Abubakar, SSANU Chairman Comrade Ismaila Bala Muhammad, and NAAT Chairman Comrade Aminu Yahaya Mika’ilu, highlighted Governor Aliyu’s timely intervention in restoring payments for visiting and sabbatical lecturers. According to the unions, this move has significantly boosted academic growth and institutional stability at Sokoto State University.
Furthermore, the unions expressed appreciation for the governor’s role in facilitating the accreditation of university programs by the National Universities Commission (NUC), noting that these efforts have strengthened the institution’s academic reputation.
Calling on their members to reciprocate the government’s goodwill, the unions urged staff to rededicate themselves to their duties and enhance productivity.
Reflecting on the university’s progress, they credited its strong foundation to its founder, Senator Dr. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, and acknowledged that Sokoto State University is among the few in Nigeria that commenced academic activities on its permanent site with state-of-the-art facilities.
While lauding the governor’s efforts, the unions also appealed for the completion of staff housing projects, stating that providing on-campus accommodation would create a more conducive academic environment.
