The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has appealed to Senator Aliyu Wamakko to intervene in its dispute with the Federal Government, seeking his mediation to restore stability and end recurring strikes in Nigeria’s university system.
Led by its National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, members of the union paid a visit to Senator Wamakko’s residence in Asokoro, Abuja, where they sought his mediation, citing his vast experience, credibility, and contributions to national development.
During the meeting, ASUU emphasized that its appeal was not politically motivated but driven by a desire to find a sustainable and permanent solution that would prevent further disruptions to academic activities. The union said Wamakko’s intervention could help rebuild trust and foster constructive dialogue between the parties.
According to the delegation, the Senator is expected to:
Initiate discussions between ASUU leadership and the Federal Government to address outstanding issues.
Urge both parties to reaffirm their commitment to implementing previous agreements.
Develop a framework for continuous engagement to prevent future crises.
Work with relevant Senate committees and the Ministry of Education to ensure accountability and transparency.
In his response, Senator Wamakko assured the ASUU delegation of his readiness to use his influence and experience to help resolve the crisis. He noted that education remains central to national development and pledged to work towards restoring normalcy in the university system.
Stakeholders believe that Wamakko’s involvement could mark a significant step toward ending the recurring industrial actions that have disrupted academic calendars across public universities for years.
As discussions progress, both the union and the Federal Government are expected to reaffirm their commitment to finding a lasting solution that safeguards the interests of students, staff, and the nation’s education sector.
