Fear and grief have gripped Sanyinna community in Tangaza LGA of Sokoto State after armed bandits suspected to be Lakurawa insurgents assassinated the village head, Malam Murtala Sa’adu (47), and his neighbor, Ibrahim Mai-Kudi.
The attack, which occurred around 1:30 am on Thursday, September 18, 2025, was described as a targeted killing. Both victims had been leaders of local vigilante groups, a move the bandits considered a direct threat.
“They had warned no one should support vigilante groups. This was a reprisal,” an eyewitness told reporters.
Troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA later evacuated the bodies and began patrols to prevent further raids.
The Tangaza council mourned the late village head, describing him as a dedicated leader who stood firm for peace and stability in his community. Authorities also suspect a notorious bandit, Buba Holo, of masterminding the killing.
The assassination adds to a growing wave of terror in Sokoto. In neighboring Kebbe and Tambuwal LGAs, entire villages—Fakku, Sha’alwashi, Tulluwa, Bashi Bakin Dutse, and Rafin-Gora—have been deserted after bandits set homes ablaze, looted property, and forced residents to flee.
Among the displaced is the village head of Fakku, now sheltering with his family and hundreds of others in Koko, Kebbi State.
