ASHENEWS reports that a building collapse has claimed three lives in Nbodo Community, Isi Ewu road Aluu in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in Rivers State, Commandant Michael Besong Ogar, while confirming the incident attributed the building collapse to the use of substandard building materials.
Ogar, in a statement released on Sunday, described the incident as an avoidable tragedy.
“Three labourers working at the construction site lost their live to the accident.
“Preliminary investigation showed that the two storey building collapsed as a result of the use of low quality iron rods and other materials in its construction.
“It is high time Nigerians began to take responsibility for their actions most especially when life of humans are involved, the collapse of the two (2) Storey building at Aluu in Ikwerre Local Government Area could have actually been avoided if standardized materials and right specifications were used,” he said.
The NSCDC commandant further warned against such sharp practices that could jeopardize lives.
“Owners of buildings and landlords are hereby advised to be wary of desperate and quack building contractors who cares only about their pockets and not the lives of innocent people,” he said.
