The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has called on officers, soldiers, and their families to recommit to national service and resilience in the face of evolving security challenges.
Oluyede, represented by the Chief of Training (Army), Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Ndalolo, made the call at the Juma’ah service held in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) and its 162nd anniversary.
He also called for unity among personnel in the service’s quest for ensuring lasting peace in the country.“As we celebrate the Nigerian Army at 162, let us be mindful that Nigerians look to us to play a vital role in overcoming the current security challenges being experienced across the country.“
We must, therefore, renew our commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty, protecting its territorial integrity, and upholding the rights of all citizens.“Let us also continue to work together, united in our quest for peace, stability, and lasting prosperity for our dear country,” he said.
The COAS emphasised the strategic importance of placing soldiers’ welfare at the heart of the Army’s transformation drive.
According to him, this was why the theme for this year’s celebration, “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army Transformation Drive” was chosen to highlight a renewed commitment to troop welfare, morale, and operational readiness.
He added that the soldier-first philosophy aligns with broader defence strategies and the evolving security architecture of the country, emphasizing personnel well-being as the bedrock of a high-performing force.
Oluyede also paid tribute to his predecessor, the late Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who died in November 2024.Calling for a minute of silence, he urged the Army family to take solace in divine will and continue to honor the memory of all personnel who have paid the supreme price.
“To the souls of our departed heroes, and the families they left behind, we owe a debt of gratitude. Nigeria and the Nigerian Army salute and celebrate their gallantry,” he said.
While reflecting on the trials of the past year, including intensified insurgency and internal security operations, the COAS praised the professionalism and sacrifice of soldiers across all theatres of operation.“Our soldiers have continued to distinguish themselves through discipline, courage and loyalty—at home and abroad.“
We remain a force focused on victory,” he said.The COAS, however, charged all formations and units to ensure that NADCEL 2025 is not only a celebration of history but a renewed call to duty.“Let us work together, united in our quest for peace, stability and lasting prosperity for our dear country,” he urged.
Also speaking, the Director of Islamic Affairs, Brig.-Gen. Usman Musa, emphasised the spiritual and symbolic importance of beginning every Army Day celebration with a religious service—whether Christian or Islamic.“This year, the Juma’ah came first.
The sermon today focused on troop welfare, encouraging soldiers to give their best in the field while reassuring them of the Army’s existing and ongoing support mechanisms,” he said.
