ASHENEWS reports that a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and now of Anambra state, Prof. Charles Soludo has thrown his weight behind the Naira design project of the apex bank, saying it is within its province to do so.
Soludo who featured on ChannelsTV’s Politics Today programme on Thursday night also reminded that during his time, the Naira was redesigned.
The former CBN governor, who didn’t want to comment on the issue, emphasized that it is within the responsibility of it to redesign the Naira, adding that Anambra state will appropriately respond to the new policy by the apex bank.
“I told you not to push me. I am not going to, as a former governor of the Central Bank, I resist and I will resist you commenting on the policies of my successor in the office in whatever form and whatever way you put it.
“Anambra will respond as appropriate. Whatever circumstances that ride out from the central, the managerial authorities and physical authorities at the centre, whatever thing they decide and throw up and that is a national policy, be sure that Anambra will appropriately adjust and respond; so we have no problem with that.
“By the way, in my own time, I got the naira redesigned. Just to make this point, I redesigned the N5, N10, N20, and N50 denominations and we got them in polymer; at least N5, N10, and N20.
“So, it is not anything new. And I also introduced the N1,000 note. Certainly, it is within the province of the Central Bank to redesign notes from time to time. It might be for security features, it might be for some other considerations. I am not here to speculate on the substance of their policies,” Soludo said.
