Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company (AEEPCO) has said that the oil spill at its Oil Mining Lease (OML) 29 Wellhead at Nembe in Bayelsa has been contained substantially. The OML 29 Wellhead in Santa Barbara South Field, which AEEPCO jointly owns with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, which blew up on November 3, is being pumped with chemicals to contain further leakage in “one or two days”. The National Population Commission (NPC) has trained field officers for a second census test-run in 12 designated Enumeration Areas in four local government areas in Bayelsa. The local government areas are Yenagoa, Ekeremor, Sagbama and Southern Ijaw. The field officers will administer questionnaires in the trial census in the Enumeration Areas from December 3 to December 10. An oldest district head in Kano, Mukhtar Adnan is reported dead. He was the Sarkin Ban Kano (District Head of Dambatta) and first commissioner of education in Kano. Adnan died in the early hours of Friday after a brief illness according to family sources. Sir Muhammadu Sanusi I, then Emir of Kano appointed Adnan as Sarkin Bai in 1954 to succeed his father. The World Health Organisation, WHO, says African countries are stepping up measures to detect and control the spread of the Omicron variant. The organization in a statement on Thursday said the development became necessary as weekly new COVID-19 cases in the continent rose by 54 per cent due to an upsurge in southern Africa. According to  WHO, the Omicron variant has now been detected in four African countries, namely Botswana, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria, while more than 20 countries have detected the variant to date. Hoodlums in Kano on Thursday morning, partly set ablaze the gubernatorial campaign office of Sen. Barau Jibrin, a perceived political opponent of the state governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
