The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has rejected allegations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that it is being used to intimidate opposition politicians, insisting its operations remain impartial and non-partisan.
EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, in a statement on Monday, said the Commission investigates both former and serving governors and ministers, regardless of political affiliation.
“If I am not condemned for investigating both former and serving strong ruling party governors and ministers, I should not be condemned for also investigating opposition figures,” Olukoyede said.
The EFCC described the ADC’s claims as “self-serving, diversionary and idle,” stressing that every corruption allegation deserves investigation without regard to time or political season.
“Available court records show several political figures from all divides facing charges of alleged corruption, while many serving state governors of various political colours remain under investigation,” the statement said.
The Commission said it would not bow to political pressure to disclose details of ongoing discreet investigations and urged political groups to allow it to carry out its statutory mandate without interference.
“The immunity against any investigation by the EFCC is accountability and probity. Fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption. There is no sacred cow,” the Commission stated.
The EFCC further called on Nigerians to ignore “political statements meant to heat up the polity and divert attention from the pillage of the national treasury.”
