…..Extravagant Projects: What Manner of Legislators
The legislators have failed to prioritize the needs of the people, instead focusing on extravagant projects and personal comforts. This misplaced focus and lack of sensitivity have left Nigerians disillusioned and struggling to survive.

In 2023, Nigerians placed their hopes in a new government, yearning for a future free from violence, corruption, and economic hardships. They entrusted Tinubu and their representatives in the National Assembly to lead the nation towards progress and prosperity. However, the reality has been far from their expectations.
The Nigerian people placed their trust in the National Assembly to lead the nation towards a better future. However, the legislators have failed to prioritize the needs of the people, instead focusing on extravagant projects and personal comforts. This misplaced focus and lack of sensitivity have left Nigerians disillusioned and struggling to survive.
Nigerians had hoped for an end to poor governance, improved security, quality education, job opportunities, and the eradication of corruption. However, seven months into the new government’s term, these aspirations remain unfulfilled. Hunger, inflation, unemployment, and decaying infrastructure have become the daily struggles of the people. The trust placed in the National Assembly has been shattered, leaving citizens disillusioned and questioning the integrity of their elected representatives.
Amidst the suffering of the Nigerian people, the National Assembly has displayed a shocking lack of sensitivity and misplaced priorities. The approval of a budget estimate allocating ₦10 billion for the construction of car parks and a recreation center for the Assembly is a clear example of this. Such extravagant expenses are unjustifiable when millions of Nigerians are struggling to make ends meet. The allocation of funds for personal comfort and luxury while neglecting the pressing needs of the people is a betrayal of the trust placed in the legislators.
Furthermore, the National Assembly’s decision to increase the budget estimate from ₦197.93 billion to ₦333.85 billion is deeply concerning. This significant increase raises questions about the transparency and accountability of the legislative body. While the budget of the National Judicial Council was also increased, the allocation for essential sectors such as healthcare and education remains inadequate. This budgetary decision reflects a lack of understanding and empathy towards the plight of the Nigerian people.
The National Assembly’s failure to address the dire situation in Northern Nigeria is particularly distressing. The region has been plagued by violence, with innocent lives lost to terrorism, banditry, and other criminal activities. The legislators, especially those representing Northern Nigerian states, have seemingly abandoned the region, leaving it vulnerable to the mercy of leaders who have failed to protect their citizens. This abandonment is a betrayal of the principles of justice and unity that the National Assembly should uphold.
It is time for Nigerians, especially the North, to rise and challenge the arrogance of their legislators and compel them to reassess their priorities, listen to the voices of the people, and work towards fulfilling their responsibilities with justice, empathy, and accountability.
