The team leader for Action Against Trafficking in Persons and Snuggling of Migrants (A-TIPSOM) Nigeria, Mr. Federico Millan has urged journalists to follow the standard reporting template in writing on Trafficking in Persons (TIP) issues.

The team leader made the call on Tuesday in Keffi, Nasarawa State, at a workshop organized to validate the standard reporting handbook for journalists covering human trafficking issues and others in the media.

A-TIPSOM is a project being promoted by the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policy (FIIAPP), a Spanish public foundation sponsored by the European Union (EU).

The compilation and documentation of the standard reporting handbook for human trafficking issues began in December 2021 by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and other partners.

Millan, who was represented at the event by A-TIPSOM Senior Project Officer, Joseph Sanwo also urged journalists to report TIP issues in line with the rights of human trafficking victims.

Earlier, the Director-General of NAPTIP, Fatima Waziri-Azi, said that there was a unique language assigned to reporting trafficking in persons issues, which journalists must learn.

Represented by  NAPTIP Director of Training and Manpower Development, Mr. Arinze Orakwe, Waziri-Azi said that journalists must work towards using the assigned language.

She said that the purpose of the workshop was to help bridge the gap for journalists and other people in the area.

The NAPTIP boss said that the workshop was also to help shape knowledge, bring up a standard reporting template, and give direction to reporters on how to effectively report TIP cases.

She urged the media to always follow the ethics guiding the profession.
