Members of the Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday raised alarm over the resurgence of secret cult-related killings in the state.
The lawmakers called on the state government and relevant security agencies to, as a matter of urgency, wade into the menace and stop the senseless killings in the state and bring the culprits to book.
The alarm followed a motion moved under matters of urgent public importance by the Hon. Frank Omosigho (PDP Oredo East).
Moving the motion, Omosighon informed the house that in the past one week, about seven young men have been killed in various locations in the state.
He said “two young men were killed in Amagba, another was shot dead while worshipping in the church, and some others were killed in Egor and Auchi.
“The rate of wanton killings among secret cult groups in Edo is worrisome and portends grave danger to the lives of the citizens,”
Omosigho, while decrying the senseless killings by the suspected cultists, urged the state government to investigate the cause of the killings with a view to putting an end to it.
Other lawmakers who spoke on the issue, also called on the DSS to be more proactive in information gathering to nib the security challenges in the bud before they escalate.
The lawmakers subsequently adopted the resolution calling on the state commissioner of police and all security agencies to wade into the matter to ensure the security of lives and property.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, said “the senseless killings is worrisome. No one has the right to take a live he or she did not create,”
Agbebaku, thereafter, directed the clerk of the house, Yahaya Omogbai, to forward copies of the resolution to relevant authorities for necessary action.
The house also received a letter signed by the Secretary to the state government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie, requesting for the confirmation of the appointment of Daniel Okungbowa as the substantive chief Judge of Edo state.
The Speaker, thereafter, referred the letter to the house committees on Rules and Business and Judiciary to screen the nominee.
