NOA urges Nigerians to seek urgent care for suspected meningitis

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to seek immediate medical care for suspected cases of meningitis to stem the scourge.

The agency warned that bacterial meningitis could kill within 24 hours.

Sarah Ogodo, Head of Communication and Media, NOA Jigawa Directorate, said this in a statement on Monday in Dutse as part of activities to mark the 2026 World Meningitis Day.

The theme of the day is “Now Is the Time for Action,” as part of the global campaign to defeat meningitis by 2030.

Ogodo said meningitis could initially resemble malaria or flu, making early recognition and prompt medical attention critical to survival.

“Bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency. About one in six patients dies, and about one in five survivors is left with lasting effects,” she said.

Ogodo listed hearing loss, brain damage and learning difficulties among possible long-term effects for survivors.

She highlighted that Nigeria’s location within the African meningitis belt exposed the country, particularly northern states, to increased risk during the hot, dry and dusty months.

The spokesman said warning signs in adults and children included sudden high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, vomiting, sensitivity to bright light, confusion, unusual drowsiness and seizures.

“For babies, signs include refusing to feed, high-pitched crying, floppiness or stiffness, a bulging soft spot on the head, and extreme irritability,” she said.

Ogodo cautioned families against waiting for a rash before seeking treatment, noting that a rash associated with blood poisoning might be difficult to see on darker skin or might not appear at all.

“Never wait for a rash before seeking help,” she said.

Ogodo advised Nigerians to present children and young people for vaccination and to maintain routine immunisation at their nearest primary healthcare centres.

She also cautioned against self-medication and delays caused by home or herbal remedies, stressing that suspected meningitis required clinical treatment.

Ogodo enjoined residents to keep homes, classrooms, dormitories and vehicles well ventilated and to avoid overcrowded and enclosed spaces, particularly during the dry season.

She advised Nigerians to maintain good hygiene by washing their hands regularly, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding shared cups, bottles and eating utensils.

Ogodo further called for continued support for meningitis survivors, including follow-up checks for hearing and learning difficulties, and urged families and communities to reject stigma.

“Now is the time for action: every hour counts, and quick action saves lives,” she said.
