Students from Usmanu Danfodiyo University (UDUS), Sokoto State University (SSU), and Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE) have commended President Bola Tinubu’s education policies.
They said these policies are making democracy beneficial to Nigerian students, especially through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund).
Representing their respective Students’ Union Governments (SUGs), the students expressed their support during a symposium held to mark the 2026 Democracy Day celebration in Sokoto on Friday.
The event, organized in collaboration with the Northern Projects Coordination Office and NELFund, attracted hundreds of students.
It had the theme: “Thank You, Mr. President, for Making Democracy Work for Students.”
Speaking at the event, Mr. Tasi’u Aminu, President of UDUS’s Students’ Union Government, described the initiative as a gesture of appreciation for Tinubu’s commitment to quality and uninterrupted education in Nigeria.
He stated that the introduction of the NELFund scheme marked a major milestone in improving access to education for Nigerian students.
“The President has played a crucial role in shaping the future of Nigerian students through the NELFund scheme.
“This program is one of the greatest opportunities ever provided for Nigerian students and has greatly enhanced access to inclusive education,” Aminu said.
He recalled that many students previously had to work menial jobs, including construction labor, to raise money for school fees.
“With the NELFund scheme and other student-focused programs, many students can now pay their school fees more easily and meet basic needs while in school,” he added.
Aminu also appreciated President Tinubu for implementing policies aimed at creating a brighter future for young Nigerians.
In his remarks, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director of NELFund, explained that the symposium was organized to celebrate Nigeria’s democracy and remind students of their vital role in national development.
“The goal is to help students understand that the country’s future depends on them and their contributions to growth.
“Students should stay focused on their studies, remain motivated, and continue working toward building a better Nigeria,” he said.
Sawyerr noted that despite Nigeria’s many challenges, students have an important responsibility to develop solutions that will shape the nation’s future.
He thanked the students for their support to the government and assured them that more dividends of democracy would reach Nigerians.
Earlier, Mrs. Amina Ibrahim, Lead Policy and Digital Inclusion Officer of the Northern Projects Coordination Office, assured students that President Tinubu remains committed to ensuring every Nigerian child has access to quality education.
She stated that the administration’s educational policies aim to expand opportunities and improve learning outcomes nationwide.
