The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has urged newly admitted sandwich degree students to uphold discipline, diligence, and academic integrity.

Olatunji-Bello made the call on Friday at the matriculation ceremony for the 2025 Modular Year Sandwich Degree students at the university’s Ojo campus.

She was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Oseni Afisi.

The vice-chancellor described the occasion as a defining moment for the students, marking their formal admission into one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions of higher learning.

She congratulated the students on their successful admission into the Sandwich Degree Programme, noting that their enrollment reflected courage, resilience, and a commitment to self-improvement.

According to her, the sandwich programme is structured to accommodate individuals combining academic pursuits with professional and family responsibilities.

“This dual responsibility requires discipline, focus, and strength of character—qualities I believe you possess,” she said.

Olatunji-Bello reiterated the university’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and societal relevance, adding that LASU has produced notable leaders and professionals across various sectors.

She explained that matriculation is not merely ceremonial but a covenant requiring students to abide by the institution’s rules and regulations.

The vice-chancellor advised the students to attend lectures regularly, complete assignments, and avoid vices such as cultism, examination malpractice, indecent dressing, and hooliganism.

She emphasized that the university maintains zero tolerance for indiscipline and warned that offenders would face appropriate sanctions.

Olatunji-Bello also encouraged the students to build meaningful relationships and networks that could benefit their future careers.

She appreciated parents and guardians for their support and urged the students to be worthy ambassadors of the institution.

In his remarks, the Director of the Sandwich Degree Programme, Prof. John Adeogun, described the event as a significant milestone in the students’ academic journey.

Adeogun assured the students that the directorate is committed to providing quality education, mentorship, and a supportive learning environment.

He noted that sandwich students often face challenges balancing academic work with other responsibilities, stressing the need for effective time management and prioritization.

The director urged the students to make use of available resources, including libraries, laboratories, and online platforms, to enhance their learning.

He added that the programme is designed to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to succeed in a dynamic global environment.

Adeogun also encouraged the students to participate in extracurricular activities, build networks, and develop leadership skills, noting that such experiences are essential for personal growth.

He assured them of the dedication of lecturers and staff to their academic success and overall well-being.

“Engage with your peers and lecturers, think critically and creatively, and take advantage of opportunities for growth and development,” he said.

The director reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to inclusivity, mutual respect, and the promotion of diverse perspectives among students.

He expressed optimism that the students would graduate with excellence in the coming years.

It was reported that the high point of the ceremony was the taking and signing of the matriculation oath.
