The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on driving against traffic following the death of a firefighter at the Trade Fair Complex, Ojo.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, made the statement on Wednesday in Lagos.
Bakare-Oki said the accident occurred on the service lane inward Abule-Ado.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that a commercial motorcyclist, riding against the approved direction of traffic at excessive speed, collided with the firefighter as he attempted to cross the expressway.
“In the ensuing confusion, an approaching Shacman truck (registration number: JJJ 919 YK), heavily laden with sand, was unable to brake in time, resulting in the fatal incident.
“LASTMA personnel responsible for traffic control in the area responded promptly, cordoning off the accident corridor to maintain order and ensure the safety of other road users,” he said.
The LASTMA boss added that, with assistance from concerned passersby, officers secured the scene and promptly notified the Onireke Police Division, which reinforced security around the area.
“The motorcyclist responsible for the initial violation fled with his motorcycle, while the Shacman truck driver abandoned the vehicle upon realizing the severity of the incident and also fled the scene.
“The remains of the late firefighter were evacuated by colleagues from the Federal Fire Service using an official ambulance deployed from the Trade Fair Complex.
“LASTMA officials handed over the impounded truck to designated security personnel for comprehensive investigation and legal action,” he said.
Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured them of LASTMA’s support.
Decrying the persistent and dangerous practice of driving against traffic in Lagos, he warned motorists and commercial motorcyclists against reckless driving.
He said such behavior had repeatedly caused needless tragedies and immeasurable grief.
Bakare-Oki urged all road users to obey directional signs and strictly adhere to government-approved speed limits as a civic responsibility essential to preserving human life.
“LASTMA reiterates its unwavering commitment to promoting safety, enforcing traffic laws, and fostering a more disciplined and responsible motoring culture throughout Lagos State,” he said.
