Professor Rabi Muhammad Ashiru is a distinguished scholar of Ruminant Nutrition and Animal Science, currently serving in the Department of Animal Science at Aliko Dangote University of Science & Technology (formerly Kano University of Science and Technology), Wudil, Kano State. She holds a Bachelor of Agriculture, an MSc, and a PhD in Animal Science—credentials that have shaped her steady rise as a researcher, educator, and mentor.
Since joining KUST Wudil, Prof. Ashiru has balanced her teaching duties with a vibrant research portfolio focused on small ruminant production in semi-arid environments. Her academic contributions span postgraduate supervision, controlled feeding trials, and extensive capacity-building efforts within her department. Her work is grounded in solving real-world production challenges affecting indigenous livestock breeds across Northern Nigeria.
Prof. Ashiru has authored or co-authored more than twenty peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers. Her notable studies include a biometric analysis of reproductive organs in three Nigerian sheep breeds, published in the International Journal of Morphology. She has also explored alternative feed resources and nutrient digestibility, including a widely cited study on the effects of complete diets containing Piliostigma thonningii leaves on the growth performance of Kano Brown bucks, featured in the Journal of Smart Agriculture and Extension Services. Other important works include research on the haematological and biochemical responses of bucks fed graded levels of Piliostigma pods, as well as co-authored studies on the anti-helminthic properties of sorghum chaff in Yankasa rams.
Her research influence is reflected in Google Scholar, where she has garnered more than 100 citations. She is also listed on the AD Scientific Index, affirming her standing as one of Nigeria’s notable voices in ruminant nutrition.
Promoted to the rank of Professor in April 2019, Prof. Ashiru achieved a historic milestone as the first female professor at KUST Wudil. Beyond academia, she has played a key role in fostering partnerships among researchers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers. Notably, she contributed to international workshops on research uptake, including initiatives on managing tannery waste in collaboration with global engineering and leather institutions.
Prof. Rabi Ashiru’s commitment to teaching, innovation, and context-driven research continues to position her as a leading figure in livestock production science in Nigeria.
