The Zamfara State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women in Agriculture (NAWIA) has empowered 114 women and six women groups with farm implements to boost agricultural production in the state.
The State Chairperson of NAWIA, Mrs. Shema’u Nalado, distributed the items to beneficiaries during an event held in Gusau on Thursday to commemorate the 2025 World Food Day (WFD).
World Food Day, observed annually on October 16, is a global call to strengthen solidarity in the fight against hunger, malnutrition, and poverty.
Nalado said that 70 women farmers received rice and soybean seedlings, organic fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides.
She added that 30 women were empowered with startup packages for small and medium enterprises, including support for beans cake and waina producers.
Each of the beneficiaries also received half a bag of charcoal, 10 kilograms of rice and beans, and a liter of cooking oil.
Similarly, six women’s groups received sprayers, water pumps, power tillers, and seedlings to enhance their productivity.
Nalado explained that the items were donated by the government and other development partners supporting the association.
She commended the increasing participation of women in agriculture, noting that NAWIA currently has over 2,000 registered members across the state.
Nalado also praised the Wife of the Zamfara State Governor, Huriyya Dauda Lawal, for her efforts in promoting women’s empowerment and agricultural development.
She further appreciated the Zamfara Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ZACCIMA), ACReSAL, NG-CARES, L-PRESS, and the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC) for their contributions.
In her remarks, the governor’s wife, represented by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Suwaiba Mallam Mani, said this year’s World Food Day theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future,” emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among farmers, families, and leaders to ensure access to nutritious food.
“As we mark this special day, I urge all farmers, especially our women farmers, to keep working hard and never give up. You are the strength of our state and the foundation of our nation’s food security.
“Let us all work hand in hand with government, the private sector, and our communities to make Zamfara a shining example of food sufficiency, resilience, and hope for the entire nation,” she said.
