The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has trained 2,100 adolescent girls on life skills and reproductive health in Bauchi State.
The training, supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), was conducted in Bauchi, Dass, Darazo, and Ganjuwa Local Government Areas between August 19 and 26.
FOMWAN Programme Coordinator, Fatsuma Mohammed, disclosed this in an interview with journalists on Monday in Bauchi.
She said the initiative was designed to equip the girls with negotiation, decision-making, and communication skills, as well as knowledge on early marriage and reproductive health, to enable them to make informed choices about their future.
“We engaged 20 training facilitators who conducted sessions attended by 105 girls per cluster,” Mohammed said.
“The programme aims to strengthen advocacy against harmful traditional practices and empower girls to reach their full potential as future leaders.
“The topics focused on teenage pregnancy and the dangers of early marriage, often described as ‘children mothering children,’” she added.
Mohammed said FOMWAN had integrated life skills and reproductive health education into its annual work plan to ensure sustainability and wider community impact.
